~ Birdwatching at Grune Point ~

For those who enjoy walking and bird spotting Grune Point is ideal. It is a grassed sand and shingle spit formed north of Skinburness and is accessible only on foot from paths near the Skinburness Hotel. From the Grune you can clearly see across the Solway marshes and Moricambe Bay. The tall masts you can see are at Anthorn and are N.A.T.O. radio masts. The turf off the Solway marshes is used on many bowling greens and football and cricket pitches throughout England.

Here is a list of birds seen:-
Greater Black Back Gull
Black Headed Gull
Lesser Black Backed Gull
Ringed Plover
Cormorant
Lapwing
Linnet
Oystercatcher
Kestrel
House Martin
Skylark
Pied Wagtail
Curlew
Dunlin
Shelduck
Mallard
Magpie
Little Owl
Collard Dove
Green Finch
Swallow
Blackbird
Wheatear
Little Tern
Heron
Turnstone

Parts of the Grune are fenced off during nesting time for Terns and people are asked not to disturb the birds during this time, although the footpaths are still open.
