Imaginative planning can be seen in Silloth’s wide elegant tree
lined streets, magnificent promenade (1),
which is excellent for a walk with scenic views across the Solway Firth
to the Galloway Hills in southern Scotland, and spacious sea front
Green. Today the Green (2) is used
by many for recreation, there is a paddling pool and sand pit, crazy
golf, putting green and bouncy castle, and for those not so energetic
plenty of seats to sit, rest, relax and admire the wonderful views,
including some traditional deckchairs for hire.
Christ Church (3) overlooking the
Green is a feature of the townscape and one of several denominational
places of worship. The Church was designed by a Carlisle man and built
in the 1870’s of granite, imported from Ireland, sandstone and brick.
Christ Church still retains its original design with no additions having
been made to the building.
Silloth also retains a busy dock (4).
A small fishing fleet is harboured here and still operates today
catching Solway Shrimps which are transported countrywide.
Silloth’s sandy West Beach (5)
which in 1999 gained the Yellow Flag Award, is a playground for children
and ideal for picnics and fishing.
Silloth is noted for its excellent 18 hole natural links Golf Course (6),
one of the most attractive and testing in the north which has hosted
National Ladies Championships. Visitors are welcome to the Silloth-on-Solway
Golf Club, but to play you must be a member of a recognised golf club.
